"Variant" and the return of the short story?
Variant is a short story by screenwriter John August (Go, Big Fish) it’s available as both a file for your Kindle (which also works on your iPhone and iPod touch) as well a downloadable PDF.
I read the free sample pages, was interested enough to pay the 99 cents for the rest of the story, and was not disappointed. The story was interesting, exciting, original and thought provoking but most exciting was that it was cheep, easy to sample, and easy to purchase.
I am eager to see if this is the start of a trend. I would love to see a resurgence of the art of the short story facilitated by these new digital devices so many of us are carrying around with us. I could easily make buying short stories of this quality a habit. You could buy one while waiting for the bus in the morning, read it on the way to work, my lunch break, and finish it on the way home. Not only is it a great opportunity for modern short story writers, but I would love to see older works made available for individual sale as well.
